SIBUR launched a project to build the production of maleic anhydride (MAN) with a capacity of 45 thousand tons per year on the territory of the SIBUR Tobolsk enterprise, informs Rupec.
Butane will be used as raw materials in production, which will increase the depth of hydrocarbon processing.
“Integration into the Tobolsk facilities will allow the new production to have a high level of competitiveness due to its close proximity to the raw material flows and the use of the existing plant-wide infrastructure,” the press service noted.
Commissioning of the plant is scheduled for 2021. NIPIGAZ was involved in the development of working documentation. It is planned to involve Russian contractors in construction and installation works, including those from the Tyumen region.
“Conser – one of the most innovative MAN production technologies in the world, has been selected as a licensor. The use of advanced technology and unique equipment eliminates the negative impact on the environment. The project complies with all norms of environmental legislation, which is confirmed by a positive conclusion of the state examination of project documentation and the results of public discussions,” – said the project manager Vladimir Mishin.
At present, maleic anhydride is not produced in Russia. The demand on the Russian market is about 4.5 thousand tons of products per year, now it is covered by imports, mainly from China, Korea and Japan. According to experts, the Russian market is estimated at 330 million roubles. With the introduction of new production, SIBUR plans to completely replace imports, to organize export supplies to the markets of Eastern and Western Europe, as well as to Turkey.
SIBUR officially announced its plans to launch MAN technology on the Tobolsk facilities in October 2016, at the same time an agreement was signed with the licensor company.
“We expect that due to the localization of MAN production, its consumption will increase by 10% per year,” said the board member, managing director Pavel Lyakhovich, in an interview with Rupec, adding that SIBUR intends to create conditions for the most favourable development of the processing of MAN in Russia.
Subsequently, the company signed an agreement with the Agency for Technological Development (APR), under which, inter alia, joint work was planned to develop the production chain of products based on MAN. Commenting on the project in March 2018, the head of SIBUR Dmitry Konov noted that if a decision on the project is made, then, together with an agreement from the processors, about their “parallel investments” in the expansion of processing capacities.
According to the Import Substitution Plan in the chemical industry, prepared by the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, in the coming years it is expected to completely abandon the imported product and switch to its own production of maleic anhydride.
Sibur is the Leading Partner of the CIS Petrochemicals conference (April 11-12, 2019). A delegation from the company will take part in the event, as well as in the co-located event – CIS Gas Monetisation.
